Sudan Demob Happy: South Sudan to stop children soldiering

South Sudan´s army (SPLA) has set up a child protection unit as part of its pledge to demobilise all child soldiers by the end of the year. Some 20,000 child soldiers are estimated to have been discharged from the SPLA, which fought a two-decade war against the Khartoum government that ended in 2005. However,  the U.N. children´s agency UNICEF believes the SPLA still has about 900 children in its ranks, according to a BBC report. Experts say transforming a rebel guerrilla movement into a professional army will be a long and difficult challenge for South Sudan, which is scheduled to hold a referendum on independence from the north in January.
