European Development Days. Meet CIDSE partner Fr. John Patrick Ngoyi Kasongo from Nigeria

CIDSE,

Rev. Fr. John Patrick Ngoyi from the Republic of Congo is Director of the Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) in the Lagos province in Nigeria. At the European Development Days (EDDs, Warsaw, 15&16 December 2011) he will discuss what needs to happen when the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) expire in 2015, in a panel organised by the European confederation of development NGOs CONCORD, of which CIDSE is a member.

Fr. Ngoyi works closely with the international alliance of Catholic development agencies CIDSE and within the Beyond 2015 coalition to define post-MDG strategies through a participatory and inclusive process which is responsive to voices of citizens all over the world, in particularly those directly affected by poverty and injustice.

According to Ngoyi, a post-MDG framework must be based on economic and social justice, instead of aid, and on accountability and responsibility of those who must respond to people’s basic needs.

In Warsaw, he will participate in Beyond 2015 – A citizen driven agenda, a panel debate on Friday 16 December 2011, 09.00AM, Copernicus Science Centre, Auditorium B.

Fr. Ngoyi is at the EDDs in Warsaw on 15 and 16 December 2011. To schedule an interview or for more information: Roeland Scholtalbers, CIDSE Media & Communication Officer, scholtalbers(at)cidse.org, +32(0)477068384

Bios – Rev. Fr. John-Patrick Ngoyi-Kasongo

Fr. Ngoyi felt called to the priesthood because of his deep interest in helping the poor and his belief that the Church’s teachings are a powerful tool for social liberation. He has remained faithful to this belief through his activism within and outside of the Church, holding several key positions outside of his executive position in JDPC including as board member of several human rights organizations in Nigeria, member of the National Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, and the African Coordinator for the Justice and Peace with the Missionary Institute of the Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae (CICM) based in Rome.

Ngoyi has written several books and publications on human rights, democratic monitoring, the role of the Church in social justice, and education. In 2005, John Patrick was invited to participate in Nigeria’s Millennium Development Goals program by the President of Nigeria.
